7 Reasons to Take a Break From Your Blog

If you read my blog often, you may have noticed that I was a bit absent last week. I make it a point to post a blog post at least two to three times each week, so having only shared one on Monday of last week was definitely a bit out of character. I’ve really enjoyed having the extra time to dedicate to this blog since graduating college, but it was beginning to feel a bit like homework. And that is not something that I ever want this blog to feel like. If your blog ever begins to feel like a chore, then you might want to follow suit. Here are a few of the reasons to take a break from your blog.

1. Your blog has begun to feel like homework.

I already work 40 hours a week at my paid job. Although I’m working to turn this blog into my full-time paid job, it’s not where I’m making my money right now. So sometimes, after spending 8 hours at work on my computer, I just don’t want to have a computer screen in my face for any longer! Somedays I feel like it’s becoming my siamese twin or something.

You may love your blog, but when it starts to feel like a chore, that’s when you need to take a step back and reevaluate what you’re doing. Homework isn’t fun and you want your blog to be something that you enjoy working on. If you don’t love it, then it will definitely show.

2. You’re exhausted.

Why on earth is it so utterly exhausting sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day? I will never comprehend this. There are days when I just don’t have the energy to stay up any extra hours writing–I just have to go to bed.

Taking care of yourself is your number one priority. Don’t let a silly blog get in the way of you getting your beauty rest. (Just kidding, your blog isn’t silly, and mine definitely isn’t either–but when it’s compared to the heavenly state of sleep, anything is silly.)

3. You need to rejuvenate yourself.

I always feel 500,000% more passionate and inspired to blog when I take a small break from it. I couldn’t wait to get back to my blog after finishing college and it was great taking a week off thinking about what to do next and where I want my blog to go from here.

If you take a break from your blog in order to revitalize your passion for blogging, then spend the week looking at blogs that are similar to where you want yours to be. Then put all of your energy into making that happen when you get back. Taking a break is great, especially if you run right back into it at full speed.

4. You need to gain a new appreciation for your blog.

Blogging is hard work. Sometimes you simply need to step away and let your absence increase your love for your blog. When you start to get sick of having to put out a new post each day, take a step back and think about why you’re doing what you’re doing. Give yourself a break and come back to it when you’re ready and when you love it again.

5. You’re letting other responsibilities and priorities fall to the wayside.

I only bring out my computer after my sweetie pie toddler has gone to bed, but there are times when I choose pumping out a new blog post over doing the dishes or laundry. Sure, I love to write, but somedays it’s more important to get my kitchen looking spic and span or reorganize my living room for the umpteenth time because toddlers.

Do not allow your blog to suck up time that you should be focusing on family, friends, or personal hygiene. Please.

6. Your blog posts suck.

Well…someone’s gotta tell you, so it might as well be me. If you’re not really feeling your blog then you’re not going to put quality work and effort into it and it’s going to show. Quality over quantity, people. That’s the golden rule of blogging. I would rather have one fantastic post than ten shitty posts any day. Readers are picky and selfish people. (Just kidding, I love you readers!) They’re not going to stick around if they don’t like what you’re putting out.

7. You have a big idea in the works.

If you’re planning on starting a new online business, putting out a new ebook, or offering a new service on your blog, then it’s completely understandable to put your blogging aside for a little bit to focus 100% on this next big project. Especially if it’s going to help build your blog/business and generate more revenue. After all, we’re all just after the cash in the long run. ;)

Have you ever taken a break from blogging, whether short or long? How did you feel when you came back?

YES to #5. And all of them really. It's been tough for me to blog lately because I'm in the midst of a crazy work season AND buying my first home. But blogging (even though it's been tough to squeeze in and find time for) has been a big release from stress too, so it's all a balancing act for me!

I love number 3. I have had to do this a time or two. I make a goal to post at least twice a week, but some weeks that feels like homework. I try and give myself a break when this happens. Thanks for the good read, Chris

Wow, these are all so on target! I'm currently in school, and while that definitely isn't as hard as being a mom and working a full time job, I've gotten to points where I HAD to stop because blogging just felt like another assignment to complete. I took a break at the beginning of this year and just came back a few weeks ago, and I've been more passionate about it than ever. It's odd, but the break was exactly what I needed. Thanks for this great post!

It's way too easy to get burnt out from blogging when you have other work you that is more important! But I always love coming back even better each time. :)
