How to Use Your Facebook Page to Promote Your Blog

Just to preface, this post is about using your blog’s Facebook Page to promote your blog rather than your personal profile. As bloggers, we know that social media is an important tool to use in promoting our blog. However, since Facebook’s algorithm only allows about 3-5% of your followers to actually see your posts in their timeline, sometimes it seems like Facebook isn’t even worth the trouble. If you’re using it right, though, you can get a lot of traffic from that platform. So I’m going to teach you how to use your Facebook Page to promote your blog.

1. Fill out your profile completely.

First of all, if you’ve never made a Facebook Page for your blog, you can use this tutorial to get started. Make sure that you completely your profile–write out your “About” section, choose which category your Page falls into, and leave no blank untouched.

Having open or unanswered blocks of space can make visitors to your page think right off the bat that you don’t keep up with your Facebook Page and they may not even continue scrolling down to see your latest posts. Flesh out your information so that your visitors can find out as much about you and your blog as they can.

2. Make sure that your profile & cover photos look appealing.

When people pop over to your page, you want them to like what they see. Facebook isn’t much for varying appearances, but you can upload pretty pictures for your profile & cover photos.

Just make sure that your profile picture and cover photo are relevant to your blog. This may be a profile photo of yourself, your blog’s logo, or another photo that you’ve taken. Be sure that whatever you’re uploading stays in line with your blog’s brand.

3. Don’t post text-only statuses.

Facebook’s newest update means that text-only statuses will receive less attention than they used to. Instead, include a photo, a link, or a video with your caption in order to make your post more likely to get viewed.

Side note: the hierarchy of Facebook posts from highest reach to lowest reach is video, link, photo, and finally text.

4. Encourage engagement.

The more a person engages with your Page, the more likely they are to see your post updates in the future. Ask your followers a question, post funny photos, and share interesting articles (including your own blog posts, of course).

5. Schedule your posts.

Did you know that Facebook has its own built-in scheduling system? Write your post update, then instead of hitting “Post,” you’ll click on the arrow and choose “Schedule Post.”

This way, you can schedule your status updates to go out throughout the day/week and you won’t have to lift a finger!

6. Promote posts.

Facebook advertising is hands-down the cheapest advertising that you will ever come across for your blog (or any business, really). And I highly recommend giving it a shot.

There are two types of Facebook promotions: promoting your Page and promoting your posts. I recommend juggling a little bit of both. Promoting your Page is a great way to get it off of the ground at the beginning. However, you want to spend a lot more focus and money on promoting your posts.

You can do this either by hitting “Boost Post” next to all of your posts or by heading into the Ads Manager and choosing a post to promote. There is some backlash on whether or not you should Boost your post or promote it, but I’ve done both and haven’t noticed much difference in results. They say that promoted posts gives you more targeting, pricing, and bidding options, so it’s probably better to go with that option.

You can promote your posts to Fans and Friends of Fans or to a group of people you choose through targeting. Always, always, always choose targeting and pick interests that have to do with your blog and your specific post. You can get to 1,000-2,000+ extra reach from just paying $5. Some of my highest traffic days on my blog have been days that I’ve only spent a few bucks to promote my post on Facebook.
